UKGC Launches Public Consultation on Online Slot Redesign

The UK Gambling Commission is currently exploring the potential for altering the mechanics of online slot machines. In an effort to protect players from gambling harm, the regulator has launched a public consultation to gather feedback on whether significant changes are necessary.

According to data from the GC, approximately 1.2% of British adults are spending excessive amounts on gambling. These individuals tend to be drawn to specific features in slot games, making them more susceptible to experiencing harm from their actions.

The UKGC has identified speed of play and frequency of betting opportunities as key factors in determining an individual’s risk for developing compulsive gaming behaviors. This latest initiative comes after a previous attempt at redesigning slot machines failed.

Industry Collaboration Falls Short

Despite previously enlisting the help of Playtech and Scientific Games, the UKGC is now ramping up its efforts. According to the regulator, these companies were unable to meet their objectives, which included limiting or removing certain features such as turbo or slam stops that have been deemed problematic. Additionally, a minimum game cycle was supposed to be implemented.

Regulators also recommended removing split-screen games entirely. When questioned about these decisions, the UKGC stated that it remains committed to reducing gambling harms even further.

Some industry organizations have pushed back against these restrictions, arguing that the UKGC’s decisions lack justification. They argue that the number of individuals experiencing gambling harm is too low to warrant such drastic measures, which could have a significant economic impact on the industry.

Combining Public Feedback with Industry Recommendations

The UKGC is open to considering all suggestions, including those put forth by Playtech and Scientific Games in their report. The regulator will take into account recommendations from all licensed operators and consult with industry experts who may be affected by these changes.

One proposed amendment involves updating the definitions of online slots in the remote gambling and software technical standards (RTS). The industry is seeking to restrict players from playing multiple games simultaneously.

Some consumers who stream their online casino gaming sessions often use split-screen functionality, allowing them to play multiple games at once and potentially spend large sums of money using features like auto-play.

Regulators are also considering implementing a minimum spin time of 2.5 seconds for slot games, allowing players to still enjoy the game while slowing down the overall pace of play. It is hoped that this measure will help reduce gambling harms.

The Commission is also discussing how these controls would be enforced. According to regulators, an independent testing agency would be responsible for ensuring compliance with these measures. In cases where discrepancies are found, they may choose to restrict specific titles or even an entire portfolio from a given company.
